  • I think it may be more apppropriate to dedicate this proposed book to just Old students of Victoria School. Perhaps we can have a similar book for Old Students from both VS and VJC in a future exercise after the formal integration of VS and VJC in the IP. It is the impression that most former students of VJC who were not from VS identfiy themselves with VJC rather the larger Victorian community. Hopefully, future intakes of non VS students into VJC would be proud to say that "i am an Old Victorian", not an "ex or Old VJCsian".

On the inclusion of Old VS students in the book to be published, perhaps primary consideration should be given to Old Victorians who are not just successful in their career or public life, or are prominent or high profile people in society, but those who genuinley take pride in identiffying themsleves with VS and making contributions to the school in an impactful way, Names of these extraordinary Old Victorians that come to mind would include Messrs Dhanabalan, the late Ong Chit Chung, Wong Hung Khim, Chiang Chie Foo, Liat Teng Lit, Llim Chye Huat, Vernon Teo, Leslie Yong Boon Chuan, and others. Thanks.

  • I tend to disagree with you, oldtime. It is for the very same reason that some former VJC students have difficulty identifying themselves as Old Victorians that more should be done to "integrate" the 2 institutions. Leaving them out means OVA do not 'recognize' them, thus alienating them further.

  • The consequences may lead to former-VJC students who are not from VS forming their own VJC alumni and when the time come for both VS and VJC to merge, there may be opposition to it. Even former RJC students oppose to RI and RJC merger.

  • the list may be too long; other than them being prominent (some were from Victoria Bridge School eg Choo Seng Quee, Ahmad Ibrahim, etc), I do not personally know them or know more about them than what is available on the internet and/or to the general public.

  • Chao Tzee Cheng – Singapore' s most famous forensic pathologist – studied at Victoria Continuation School but some said Victoria Continuation School does not qualify to be under the family of Victoria. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chao_Tzee_Cheng

Kirpa Ram Vij, S'pore first Chief of Staff, SAF, 1970-74 is also from Victoria Continuation School, also known as Victoria Afternoon School at the Tyrwhitt Road campus.

  • VCS was a separate institution from VS except that it was housed in the same premise. It operated in the afternoon session and hence was also known as Victoria Afternoon School. When Beatty Secondary School was started in the mid 1950s in Beatty Road, it took over the entire student population from VCS and VCS ceased to exist thereafter.

  • oldtime, i agree with you that VCS should not be in the Victorian family then; they seem more like the alumnus of Beatty
However, OVA Introduction still include VCS.

    Old Victorians’ Association
The Old Victorians’ Association was established in 1941 as a formal channel for ex-students to continue to associate with our alma mater after we have left the school or the college. These include Victoria Afternoon School, Victoria Bridge School, Victoria Pre-University, Victoria School and Victoria Junior College.

  • If I am not wrong, S Yogarajah, former Singapore Hockey Association secretary who was a key figure in local hockey in the 50s-60s, is a former Victorian too.

  • Pg A4 of today's Straits Times refers. The senior educationist featured Mr Goh Ek Piang is an Old Victorian who was an outstanding sportsman during his schooldays in the mid 1960s.
Aged 62, Mr Goh is retiring from the Education Service which he has served since the age 17 (after O level) and had held the posts of PE teacher, primary school principal and Dy Director for CCA in MOE. In his citation of Mr Goh at a ceremony yesterday honouring retiiring education officers, the Minister of Education described him as a "strong advocate of outdoor adventure education." Mr Goh has indeed done VS proud, continuing on the fine tradition of the school in producing outstanding educationists in the sports science, in particular Dr Low Wing Kee, former Director of Sports and Physical Educatiion at the prestigious Hong Kong University, and Dr Lau Teng Chuan, former CEO of Singapore Sports Council and Secretary General of the Singapore National Olympic Council. Incidentally both Dr Low and Dr Lau, now in their 80s were great all round sportsmen during their younger days.

A Short Tribute to Retiring Principals
21 We have a strong and effective education system today because of dedicated school leaders who are able to adapt to the changing demands of the time. Amongst the Senior Education Officers who have or will be retiring this year, Miss Tay Siew Lian, Miss Ong Pheng Yen and Mr Goh Ek Piang will be retiring as Deputy Directors.

22 Being the first Principal of Hougang Primary from 2000—2007, Mr Goh Ek Piang, a strong advocate of Outdoor Adventure Education (OAE) had incorporated OAE into the curriculum and integrated it into Physical Education lessons. I visited the school recently and saw students climbing rock walls and zipping aross the school in the air. The school’s innovative efforts were recognised when the school was awarded the Programme for School Based Excellence Award in Outdoor Adventure Education in 2005. The school leads other primary schools as the Cluster Centre of Excellence for OAE today.

  • 23As Deputy Director in-charge of Co-Curricular Activities, Ek Piang remained true to his conviction of doing his best to enrich the learning experiences of students by putting into place plans for sports and talent development. Ek Piang will be retiring after 45 years of dedicated service.

Ng Soo Nam, who was voted as Singapore's best fund manager, was featured in a full page Sunday Times article several years ago. Coming from a poor family, he had to work part-time when still studying at VS. He was still able to obtain very outstanding results and landed himself a government scholarship. He stayed in the civil service for a few years before moving to fund management.

  • R Alagirisamy, three time VS School Champion athlete and best peformer from 1966-1968, one of the best long distance runners of the country in the 1960-70s. An Asean inter-varsity champion, he was the first Singaporean to break the four minute barrier for the 1500 metres in 1972.

  • Who should be invited as the Guest of Honour for Victoria 135? By Sept, President Nathan would have retired (Aug 2011). Perhaps DPM Wong Kan Seng is a good choice as he had attended night classes (for the Chinese subject) at the Tyrwhitt Road campus before. He had said during a previous VS Speech Day that he can claim to be a 'Victorian' too.

  • Thanks for the reference.
It is interesting to note that Dr Phay Seng Whatt, the Chairman of the Public Service Commission from 1962 to 1975, is both an old boy of VS and RI. http://newspapers.nl.sg/Digitised/Article/straits
Dr Phay should be in VS 135 book.

  • Straits Times' Life Section Monday Interview had featured Sonny Liew and Iskandar Jalil. Both should be considered for VS 135 book.

  • S Yogarajah, known as 'Mr Hockey' in Singapore, was Singapore Hockey Federation's honorary secretary and national team selector for 29 years from 1950 to 1979 – should be considered for VS 135 book too. http://newspapers.nl.sg/Digitised/Article/straitshttp://newspapers.nl.sg/Digitised/Article/straits

  • Besides R Alagirisamy being the first Singaporean to break the 4 min barrier for 1500 metres, Fok Keng Choy held the Singapore national shot put record for almost 20 years is also worth mentioning: http://newspapers.nl.sg/Digitised/Article/straitshttp://newspapers.nl.sg/Digitised/Article/straits

  • These people may not be from Victoria:
    1. Robin Chan – former national football coach – no info saying he is Victorian
    2. Jerome Henderson – Olympian (basketball) – mentioned in book on Singapore Olympians to be from VS; but ST newspapers archives seem to show that he is from SJI

  • Mr Jerome Henderson was indeed from SJI. He was an outstanding athlete too.
Robin Chan, unlikely to be from VS, probably from Bartley Sec Sch together with Quak Kim Lye in the late 50s or early 60s. Bartley was then a strong football team.

  • Dr Vincent Wijeysingha, former VS boy – Prominent member of Opposition in S'pore

  • is there an error in his school bg?

  • Dr Vincent W was in VS from 1983-1986. 2 yrs Teo Ser Luck junior and 3 yrs Desmond Lim junior.

You can look out for Victoria School in the 3rd semi-final of the "Chinese Language Challenge" on Channel 8, 23rd Apr (Sat), 8 pm. A total of 64 schools have been featured from the preliminary round.
In the 1st semi-final, VS was leading until towards the end when Hwa Chong Institution overtook VS and became the 1st school to qualify for the finals. The same thing happened again in the 2nd semi-final. VS was leading until towards the end when Tanjong Katong Girls' School overtook VS and became the 2nd school to qualify for the finals. VS will have another chance again on 23rd Apr (Sat).

  • When will VS produce another Dhanabalan? There are many old boys of the school who are now very successful in their career be it in the public or private sector or in business.

  • VS prime era was from the 50s to the 70s, until the introduction of SAP schools and independent schools, which took many of the cream away from VS. Ministers nowadays need to be scholars. As a percentage, not that many VS students getting the elite scholarships nowadays. 3 new PAP candidates are from VJC however in the coming election. Things will look good again when VS implement IP next year, and with the eventual merger of VS and VJC, the new merger school will be one of the top 3 schools (together with Raffles and Hwa Chong) in Singapore.

  • VICTORIA Junior College student Sophie Chew has been awarded the Angus Ross Prize 2010.

The Angus Ross Prize is given to the best performance in the November GCE A-Level Literature in English examinations by a non-UK candidate, and is open to all candidates (outside the UK) taking the various A-Level Literature in English syllabuses examined by University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE).

A spokesman from University of Cambridge International Examinations said: 'The Cambridge Angus Ross Prize is open to students around the world, and once again it has been won by a student from Singapore – an impressive record of achievement.'

The Angus Ross Prize winner is selected by a group of senior examiners who look for, among other criteria, maturity of thought and brilliance of expression in students' scripts.

The prize is named after Dr Angus Ross in honour of his long association with CIE as chairman of the A-Level Literature in English Examiners.

  • Michelle Chong is the 2nd VJC girl to be featured in Monday Interview, Life Section (Straits Times, 20 June 2011) after Sun Yeow Sun.

  • An old VS boy from the 1960s recalled that during the early period of that decade, VS was a popular choice for Pre U education of several outstanding students from the Bukit Panjang Govt High School.
    Among these BPGHS alumni are:

Dr Siah Kim Bin, VS Champion Athlete and Best Perfomer 1962-63. His forte was in middle distance running, yet he was also a member of the victorious 4X100 m relay team. An ardent Old Victorian, he was ever present at the Annual School Athletics Meet, taking part in the Old Boys' events, for several years, after he left VS to do his medical studies at the Spore University.

Dr Law Song Seng, former Director and CEO of ITE, he was a contemporary of Dr Siah in VS, and was also a school representative in athletics. He was later awarded a Colombo Plan scholarship.

Clinical Prof Low Cheng Hock, Emeritus Consultant of Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He was in VS from 1961-62. A renowned medical professional in Singapore and active in public service

    to be cont'd

  • I think Lam Chuan Leong is from Tanjong Katong Tech before VS.

  • Prof Low Cheng Hock seem to be from St Gabriel's/Montford before VS. http://www.gabrielites.org/community.htm http://www.montfortians.org/foundation.php

  • Prof Low had his seccondary education at BPGHS before he joined VS for his Pre U studies.
    Pl see attd ST report
    http://surreal.wordpress.com/2005/12/11/neighbour

  • Mr Lam Chuan Leong was cited by then SM Goh in July 2005 as a distinguished Old Boy of BPGHS when he visited the school in July 2005 on the occasion of the school's 45th anniversary.

  • In the years before, intakes of promising students in Spore schools were evenly spread, they went to schools all over Spore. VS had its fair share of such students, so did schools like St Andrew's, St Joseph's, Gan Eng Seng, Monfort Secondary, CHIJ, Outram Sec Sch and others. Mr Ngiam Tong Dow, the former top civil servant, did his Pre U at St Andrew's, his brother Dr Ngiam Tong Tow, former CEO of AVA, had his at VS, ex Minister Yeo Ning Hong was from GESS.

Of course, in the old days, there were many students who did not fare well academically but they later bloomed into outstanding entreprenuers and other professionals, having on their employment or in their services, PhD holders and other top academic talents from the so called elite schools. This obtains even now.

CHRIS Yip-Au often gets teased by her teammates and teacher about being the Lionel Messi of her Victoria Junior College (VJC) girls’ soccer team.
As always, the 17-year-old blushes and shrugs the huge compliment off, preferring to stay humble and focused. But, as they say, there’s always truth in every joke.
Surprisingly, soccer hadn’t always been a passion for the JC 1 student.
