As a lead-up to the Victoria 135 Dinner on 18 September, the OVA wishes to honour our educators who gave of themselves to make us who we are today. Some of those we have invited have graciously agreed to be part of the celebrations.

Our first profile will be of Mrs. Poon who left Victoria School in 2004. Grab your tickets for the dinner quick, to get your chance to see her in person and thank her for the memorable days you had in VS.

1) What are you doing now?
I am at present enjoying a blissful retirement having fun with my grandchildren

2) What are your fondest memories of Victoria?
Most pleasant memories? The students of course! They are fun, and intelligent. Even now i miss them

3) Any message for present teachers? Words of wisdom?
I don’ t think I can dish out any words of wisdom but I’m glad to share with the newbies: a teacher must love children first and foremost. He has to think of ways to engage them.

  • Nice to read this posting of a gracious Old Teacher of VS and the initiatives of OVA to honour the teachers

Was Mrs Poon among the first batch of three female non-graduate teachers posted to VS in 1965?
These dedicated teachers went on to stay in the school for many years. Reportedly, a student had honoured one of these teachers by nominating her to attend his Stanford or Harvard University convocation, Apparently this Old Victorian had graduated with top grades and it was the practice of his university to award such students by allowing them to nominate a school teacher who had made a great impact on them for the US trip.

Prior to that, the first batch of graduate teachers were posted to the school in 1963, among whom was one Mrs Neo who taught Geography in the upper secondary classes.

    Good Day,

My name is Wahab Marican. I studied in VS from 1968 to 1971. If I am not wrong, Mrs Poon was formerly Miss Chen. She was very pretty and petite. She was my form teacher of Secondary 2B in 1969. I still remember Ms Molly Ng who taught Geography, Mr Alan Gwyne, Mr Somasundram, Mr Balagopal, Mr Retnam Pierre, Mr Mok Khoon Yam, Mr Seow Joke Hong (NPCC teacher), Mr Ho Kiat Chong who taught me Maths in 1968 and also the PE teacher.

    Viva la Victoria!

  • Hi Mr Wahap,

Messrs Mok Khoon Yam and Retnam Pierre, had passed away many years ago.
Both, together with the late Mr S Soocelaraj, were iconic sportsmasters of the school. Mr Mok, also an excellent a and e maths teacher, had retired as a Senior Assistant (Vice-Principal) of the school.

Gd day Mr Goh, Thanks. I am aware of the demised of our beloved teachers. After 1971 I still monitored the development of the school in the field of academics and sports. I had nephews who attended VS. I also had friends who taught in VS. Occasionally I do bump into Mr Ismail Jelaney (PE teacher) and Mr Muhammad Mas'ud the language teacher. Its always feel good reminiscing the good old days in VS. Indeed Victoria School is something more!

    Viva la Victoria!

Dear nostalgian….your info is incorrect. Mr Soocelaraj only passed away this morning at 1am and not way back beyond July as your post have claimed. Anyways, all of you who know Ganesh, the funeral is tomorrow.

Mrs Poon was my form teacher in Sec 2B 1982. She was also one of the best teachers I had in VS.

I came across this page when I was looking for an old school mate. Disappointing to see little about Pre era 63. I was in VS from 57 to 61. Many prominent school mates in this epoch and prior in 50. And right after the war.
