Well done, Venu, and teachers
this brings back fond memory of the 1960s when we had sports heros like Nga Thio Wah, Kader Sultan, Bahrom Salleh, Giang Toh Chye and others who played several sports and at national school levels. Mr Nga, in particular, was one great sportsmen and all rounder who represented VS at no fewer than seven different games. He was notably a 'star' goalkeeper for the Singapore Combined Schools' football team and one of the top schoolboys' rugger player.
Mr Nga Thio Hwa, during his days as a VS schoolboy from 1959-64 represented VS with great distinction in the following sports
football
rugby
athletics
swimming
badminton
hockey
softball
The sportsmaster then was the late Mr S Soccelaraj who was a national cricket, hockey and rugby player. When he was a student, he was an all rounder sportsman at the Penang Free School in Malaysia,
Both Mr Nga and Mr Soccelaraj are legendary personaliites in VS sporting annals.
Dear oldtime,
I chanced upon this website and am pleasant to see my father's name on it π Nga Thio Hwa!
… am *pleasantly surprised i meant…..
A good update of the people who showed that it can be done at the very top level.
You will be happy to know that Mr. Sooceleraj is still agood and maybe not as agile and active as he used to be in the sporting heydays of the 50's to the 90s'.
There is a write up on Mr A Vijiaratnam in this morning's The Sunday Times (Page 42).
One of Singapore's best all round sportsmen (he represented Singapore in football, hockey, cricket and rugby) from 1946 to 1956. Now aged 90, Mr Vijiaratnam was an oustanding student during his schooldays in VS in pre war Singapore, both in studies and sports.
very sorry, about the info error on Mr Soocelaraj
it is wonderful to know that this great teacher is well
I am pleased to be able to get Dr Vijiaratnam to attend Victoria School's 135th Anniversary this Sunday evening (18 Sep 2011) to held at the iconic old Victoria School building at Tyrwhitt Rd.
He is probably the oldest Victorian we can locate and a great Victorian Treasure !!
