It is with sadness that I report the demise of one of our teachers – the late Mr Woon Sui Kut – a swimming icon.

woonsuikutHe was a teacher in Victoria School and was also the Swimming Teacher who steered our swimming team to many glories.

He was a long serving official of the Singapore Swimming Association. He also established himself internationally as a Technical Official and was a member of FINA Technical Committee. He had officiated numerous Olympics Games.

He had in fact given his whole life to the swimming fraternity.

I knew him very well in the sports scenes both locally and overseas – myself with the Athletics and Dragon Boat Teams, and he with the Swimming Officials. He was always jovial and full of fun.

When I was tasked in the SAF to teach recruits to swim before they were enlisted, the first person who came to my mind was Mr Woon Sui Kut who was then also in the Ministry of Education. He gladly assisted me with the implementation of the project and the training of the Physical Training Instructors.

I do miss him. I am sure many of our old boys do too. He was a humble and friendly person who always spoke fairly and sensibly at disputes.
